From Alain Miles, who says:

This photo is the river more or less as I remember it – a place of wonder and adventure for a child. Thinking back, it’s extraordinary that our parents gave us so much freedom to roam. Somehow it was a less dangerous time.

When I showed this to my writing friend Chris Pearson, he said: “I was a bit underwhelmed by your health & safety conclusion. I couldn’t help feeling that the first two-thirds of the poem deserved a better ending.”

That’s quite often how I feel about progress. It makes golden memories extra special.
